Sassicaia is a famous Italian wine created in the 1920s by one of the owners of the legendary horse, Ribot. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta wanted to produce an impeccable, first-class Bordeaux at his estate. After all, for many generations, his family had owned the "stone lands" of Sassicaia in Bolgheri, home to the same grapes as Bordeaux — Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Until 1967, only family members and close friends could enjoy the wine. When it was finally made available for sale in 1968, connoisseurs from Bordeaux welcomed it with great enthusiasm. Sassicaia also became the only Italian estate to have been given the status of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Comtrollata).
