The first mention of this famous estate dates back to the 12th century. It first became famous in the 18th century, when the future American president, Thomas Jefferson (at that time the US Ambassador to France), called Chateau Margaux the best example of a Medoc wine.
Napoleon III, an avid proponent of this wine, also did Chateau Margaux a great service. In 1855, he held the World's Fair in Paris to promote French goods. It featured a blind wine tasting competition. Chateau Margaux was the only wine to receive 20 points out of a possible 20. After that, it was ascribed the Premier Grand Cru Classé, that is, to the highest grade of wine classification.
