The best French red wines are born in the Bordeaux wine region, in the department of Gironde. Some 113,000 hectares around the city of Bordeaux are occupied by vines. Wine is made at 8,500 estates (chateaux). Every year, France exports at least 700 million bottles of first-class wine. The five finest estates making the best wines are also located in Bordeaux. These are Lafite Rothschild, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Haut-Brion, and Margaux.
Apart from the name of the beverage, each Bordeaux wine label features an image of the family estate from which the wine originates.
